Cerec-Same Day Porcelain Crowns

Technology today is changing our everyday lives. Many people, however, aren’t aware that technology also is improving dentistry in new and exciting ways. Cutting-edge innovations in dental instruments are requiring less time in the dental chair, causing less discomfort and creating satisfying results. One breakthrough instrument, called the CEREC® Bluecam, allows Dr. Dowd to quickly restore damaged teeth with beautiful porcelain restorations in one appointment.

What is CEREC?

CEREC® stands for CEramic REConstruction. It means that Dr. Dowd can restore damaged teeth in a single appointment using high-quality, high strength ceramic materials that match the natural color and shape of your teeth.

How does the instrument work?

CERECuses CAD/CAM (Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacturing) technology, incorporating a 3D camera, specialized medical computer and milling machine in one instrument. The dentist uses a special 3D camera to take an accurate picture of the damaged tooth. This optical impression is transferred and displayed on a color computer screen, where Dr. Dowd uses CAD technology to design the restoration. Then CAM takes over and automatically creates the restoration while the patient waits. Finally, the dentist bonds the new restoration to the surface of the old tooth. The whole process takes about one hour.

What does this innovation mean for a patient?

A tooth-colored restoration means no more dark silver fillings discoloring smiles. The crown, veneer, or filling is natural-looking, extremely strong, compatible with tissue in the mouth, anti-abrasive, and plaque resistant. Because it’s done in one visit you don’t have to wear a temporary crown for two weeks or have impressions taken to send to an outside dental lab. We’re able to eliminate the traditional second visit and having to be numbed again. Should you have unusual shading patterns to your teeth Dr. Dowd can custom shade your crown or veneer to match your natural teeth here in our in-office lab.
